I will be back soon. Under no circumstance let it touch the ground; do you hear me? The boy nodded, tightly grasping the Atma-lingam. Satisfied that the boy had understood, Ravan left. What a shock 😲 he got when he returned! The Lingam was on the ground and the boy was nowhere to be seen! "Aaargh! Ravan ran to pick it up. But it was sinking into the ground. "Unngg hhhh!" Ravan pulled. But the Lingam did not budge. "Huh? This is no Lingam! These are cow ears now! a defeated Ravan stopped tugging. (These cow ears sticking out became the site of a famous temple called Gokarnam or cow's ears. People pay respect to Shiva's Atma-lingam here). Thus, Ravan returned to Lanka with nothing to show! It is said that Ravan's mother resumed her fast and most probably passed away after a while. Ravan's foolishness was never forgotten. ©Sanjoy Khuman

#ravan White "Ravan's Foolishness -3" "Oh, leave me, let me go! Uma cried 😭, struggling. But Ravan went on homewards. A wandering Brahmin stopped him midway! Do you know who the Brahmin was? Lord Vishnu! "Oh, why are you towing that old hag on your shoulders? the Brahmin inquired politely. "Old hag? What? Ravan asked confused. "Yes, said the Brahmin, "I thought that normally you were interested in only the most beautiful females." You must be as blind as a bat, said Ravan arrogantly, otherwise you would have recognised that this is Uma, the most beautiful of all Goddesses. See for yourself, said the Brahmin mockingly. He flipped Uma down and gasped. Smart Uma! Hearing the Brahmin's words, she switched herself by magic into an ugly old hag! "Yea! Ravan released her snarling. "Phooey! Go away, ugly, horrible woman. Shoooo!" Uma needed no second call! She ran right away! All the way to Kailash and Lord Shiva! Ravan had been fooled yet again! "Well, I have the Lingam at least!" Ravan consoled. #ravan "Ravan's Foolishness -2" "Lord Shiva, grant me three wishes!" "So be it! Shiva nodded, saying, "And what are the wishes? "Firstly, make me immortal! Secondly, give the Atma-lingam to carry back home to my mother for worship. Lastly, I want to have a beautiful wife, who is parallel to Uma, your wife, in beauty! "Hmmm!" Shiva hummed in a muse saying, "There are conditions though!" Ravan nodded his head rapidly, "What conditions? First I will grant you the boon of immortality. But if in any way you use your powers to harm me, then that boon will become null and void. Secondly, once you possess the Atma-lingam, never place it on the ground. It can never be yours then! Ravan agreed to the two conditions. Then Shiva said, "Ravan, your last wish is difficult to grant! Uma is the most beautiful in all the worlds and there is no one to challenge that!" "Then give me Uma herself " barked the shameless demon. He pursued the matter with Shiva till Shiva agreed to hand over Uma, his wife! Ravan swung Uma over his shoulders, held the Atma-lingam in one hand and the boon of immortality made him recover all his lost heads. On his way, he met Narada. "Aha! Ravan, the great demon. Where are you off to? said Narada. "Aha! Shiva has granted me these boons," Ravan boasted, narrating the entire episode. "Oh, I don't know," Narada frowned in doubt. "What do you mean? Ravan demanded. "Well, you must be an utter fool to believe that Lord Shiva will grant you all this and threaten his own ascetic powers!" Ravan bellowed, "No, I am not." An argument ensued! Cleverly, Narada convinced Ravan that Shiva had duped him. An incensed Ravan chased off to Mount Kailash and uprooted the mountain where Shiva sat meditating. Though he wrecked mayhem, Shiva came to no injury. But Ravan had tried to harm him and thus, the boon of immortality became null and void. #ravan "Ravan's Foolishness" "Boo-hooo! The priceless Lingham is stolen! What will I pray to? cried Ravan's mother. "I will fast unto death until I find a fitting replacement," she said sobbing. Now, this flustered Ravan, the powerful, ten-headed demon king of Lanka. Ravan set out to find a replacement for the priceless Lingam. This could only be granted by the great Lord Shiva himself! "I will pray so hard that Lord Shiva will have to grant me my wishes! Ravan decided and travelled up to Mount Kailash where Shiva resided. He began his prayers. First he lit five roaring fires. Ravan somersaulted and stood in the middle of the fires on his head! One thousand years passed! Ravan marked the end of a thousand years by chopping off one of his heads and throwing it into the flames. This went on till ten thousand years passed and Ravan's only one head was left! "My last head is left. Here, great Shiva, I will chop it off too! Just as Ravan was about to sever his head, Shiva appeared! "I am impressed by your self mortifying devotion!
